- No doubt about it — Americans are living in a time of unprecedented frustration with our federal government. While this affects everyone (even our elected and appointed officials) it is particularly a problem for us as ordinary citizens. Those of us who have not been elected or appointed to federal office have little or no influence over the political power structure in Washington DC. Clearly doing more of what already isn’t working isn’t the answer.While i share this collective frustration, I also see a bright light at the end of the tunnel, and no, it’s NOT the train coming from the other direction!
It’s the bright promise that We, The People have what it takes, we can turn this situation around — in fact, We The People are the only answer to these problems. Working together in partnership with our democratic institutions we can help can steer the ‘ship of state’ out of the treacherous waters where it is becalmed and into a positive direction.To do that we need to arm ourselves with knowledge, understanding, courage, fortitude, endurance, and above all, compassion and fidelity to our democratic way of life, a history founded on the principles plainly stated in the Declaration of Independence and our Constitution. We already have what it takes, but as ordinary citizens, we haven’t yet realized that we are the elusive answer that can stop the downward spiral into action.
